WANTED! Student Events Organisers
Want to sex up your CV? We're looking for motivated students who are up for a challenge, to be part of our innovative youth volunteering programme. Your challenge? Put on events in your college or uni to raise money for the UK's first online charity.
If a career in Events, Marketing, PR or the Charity Sector sounds like your kind of thing, then fundraising for YouthNet could open up a world of opportunities.
By raising a minimum of just £150, you will be helping to inform young people about drink, drugs, relationships, travel and more through our award winning website, TheSite.org, whilst learning a trick or two yourself.
Why did you become a Student Events Organiser for YouthNet?
I discovered the opportunity through v-inspired. I'm interested in events organising and hope to go in to this in the future so thought that a voluntary position would be the best way to gain experience. I checked out the charity and found it a great way of educating and helping young people, so decided I'd like to chip in!
What event did you choose to organise and why?
I held a 'Battle of the bands' at the Frog and Nightingale in Chester, which is a live music bar with a range of young people as the main punters. I knew that the customers would enjoy the event, bands would be eager to participate, the charity would be widely advertised and people would pay to be there!
What did you find most challenging about organising your event?
The biggest challenge was getting businesses to donate goods for prizes. But I found that going in to places with a letter-headed plea (including the Charity registered number, logo and address) and speaking face-to-face was a lot more effective than just sending an email, as it is more personal and shows dedication.
What did you find most enjoyable about organising your event?
I really enjoyed the event promotion. Everything was set and ready for the night and I could relax and enjoy! I had my fantastic, professional leaflets designed by a student graphics designer, and went around town and local bars promoting the gig and charity.
What advice would you give to a new Student Events Organiser?
The best advice I could give is make sure you chose an event that interests you, rather than one that you think will be most popular. You have to spend so much time working on it, so if you don't enjoy it you'll lose interest and you won't organise the event to the best of your abilities.
Fundraising for YouthNet will open up a world of opportunities
Why not get a group of mates together and form a 'committee'? Put on a toga night, a battle of the bands, a sports tournament or a sponsored team skydive. These are just a few suggestions, but the list of possibilities is endless. Be creative, be imaginative, be inspiring.
The beauty of this opportunity is its flexibility. The events you organise are your own, so you choose when they take place and use your organisational skills to ensure all the preparation is completed in time.
What's in it for you?
Invaluable, practical experience for your CV, which will allow your leadership qualities to shine;
A written reference from YouthNet;
The opportunity to work towards a vinspired award.
Constant support from an enthusiastic team at YouthNet;
A start-up pack, helping you to get your ideas off the ground.
The team at YouthNet will give you all the support you need along the way, and will always be at the end of the phone to answer any questions you have.
Why raise money for YouthNet?
Have you ever wanted to know the answer to a question but been too afraid to ask? YouthNet provides 16 to 25-year-olds with all the answers they need to any issues they may come across in their life. Whatever the topic, www.TheSite.org isn't shy in telling it as it is.
Your fundraising efforts will be essential in enabling YouthNet to continue to provide frank, honest and expert advice on everything from self harm to sexuality and to help more young people make life changing decisions every day.
