Where did you hear about the Royal Parks Half Marathon?
I first heard about the Royal Parks Half Marathon through a post on TheSite.org's discussion boards asking if people would be up for participating. I think honestly it was one of the mad optimistic moments when you think that you can achieve absolutely anything so I decided to put my name forward.
Why did you decide to run the Royal Parks Half Marathon in aid of YouthNet?
Mostly because I feel that YouthNet is an extremely worthwhile cause and I could see how helpful the service askthesite would be. I know from my own personal experience that many young people do turn to the internet in a crisis when they may feel that they have no one else to talk to. Being able to type exactly how you feel and receiving a tailored and personal reply could be the sort of assistance that someone could really need.
What were the most effective fundraising methods you used to reach your target?
Badgering people constantly. But also setting up a justgiving page because it makes things so much easier for your sponsors.
How did you train for the run?
I found training for the marathon particularly difficult because I knew nothing about fitness. I would recommend finding someone gullible enough to train with because having someone alongside of you really does motivate you. During training I set myself personal goals using a website that allowed you to map your training route on.
What did you enjoy most about the day itself?
Being able to do the whole thing with Franki there and inventing our own stupidly perky cheer leading mantras to spur us on. Also although I walked the half marathon at a fast pace the most amazing part was right towards the end when one of the helpers shouted at us, "Run!" and although we were very tired, we still managed to run through the finish line. I felt quite emotional too, which I really didn't expect.
Brighton Marathon
Debuting in 2010, the first ever Brighton Marathon took place on Sunday April 18 and was a huge success! Following a couple of injuries and drop-outs, four brave runners made it to the start line and I'm happy to report they all crossed the finish line as well, raising over £4,000 so far in sponsorship for YouthNet.
Thanks to all who took part!
